Let Your Voice Be Heard – May 7

Today, May 3, is the last day of Early Voting, so mark your calendar to vote on Saturday if you did not Vote Early.  On the ballot are the $1.2M Bond Program, two proposed changes to the Texas Constitution, and local school board elections.

San Antonio $1.2 Bond Program

The five-year, $1.2 billion bond program will still need voter approval at the May 7 election. The 183 different projects are split between six propositions, which voters will take up separately:

  1. Streets, bridges, sidewalks – $471.6M
  2. Parks and recreation – $271.9M
  3. Drainage and flood control – $169.9M
  4. Affordable housing – $150M
  5. Public Safety Facilities – $78.3M
  6. Library and Cultural Facilities – $58.4M

While the bond does not include a tax increase, the increasing property values will impact taxes,

Texas Constitutional Amendment

Two proposed constitutional amendments would lower property taxes for homeowners if they are approved by voters on May 7.

Proposition 1

“The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide for the reduction of the amount of a limitation on the total amount of ad valorem taxes that may be imposed for general elementary and secondary public school purposes on the residence homestead of a person who is elderly or disabled to reflect any statutory reduction from the preceding tax year in the maximum compressed rate of the maintenance and operations taxes imposed for those purposes on the homestead.”

Proposition 2

“The constitutional amendment increasing the amount of the residence homestead exemption from ad valorem taxation for public school purposes from $25,000 to $40,000.”

NEISD School District

Three of the seven NEISD Trustees are on the ballot this year. Our current District 7 Trustee has three candidates on the ballot.

○ Marsha Landry

○ Joseph Trevino

○ Sandy Winkley

Then I discovered that I missed the recent redistricting of the Trustee districts. Our community has been moved from NEISD Trustee District 7 to District 1. Our new District 1 Trustee will be on the May 2024 ballot. So I assume we will not be voting for the District 7 Trustee this go around.

We all know how important education is for our children, so get to know our new District 1 Trustee, Sandy Hughey, so you will be prepared when we vote for the NEISD trustee in May 2024.
